Our film festival, year-long curation, and initiatives would not be possible without our partners who stand by our mission of bridging the arts and sciences. In the spirit of the Science New Wave, we refer to these supporters as the transcription factors that enable our gene expression.
"This year's Imagine Science Film Festival is by far the most ambitious undertaking, worthy of its 15th year of existence. Films coming from corners of the world will accompany us during these 8 days. Spectators will discover the visit of supernatural presence in a Costa Rican sci-fi, Canadian confessions of grim futures, cinematographic archives of a Mexican grandmother, the journey of a climate activist from Ecuador to Switzerland, and the surreal frog downpour in the Philippines, amongst many other horizons, themes, sensitivities, and perspectives. Over 100 films from distinct voices will join our Science New Wave anniversary edition."

When and where will the festival take place?
We're celebrating our 15th Anniversary! Learn more about how this journey all began.

The 15th Imagine Science Film Festival will be hybrid (in-person + virtual) this year. We know we're all tired of the remote format and want to be in vivo but trust us! We're providing a hybrid experience as the world is still in flux, and we want to make sure our science/cinema programs, full of discovery, experimentation, and magic, reach our audiences of artists, scientists, and hybrids within the confines of the New York City jungle and beyond.

The 8-day festival, full of Science New Wave cinema, is from October 14 to 21.

Our Features and Short Programs are playing both in person in New York and virtually on our streaming platform, Labocine.

Our festival partner LABOCINE is also presenting a section titled LABOCINE CLOSE-UPS that will only be streaming during the festival.

The festival will have several in-person events so make sure to catch those if you are in town! We will have feature premieres, panels, workshops, and many more surprises for our 15th edition. Our full program and festival line-up will be unveiled by mid-September!

Our partnering venues are the Museum of Moving Image, Cinema Village, Wythe Hotel, Caveat, & the NYU Production Lab.

Highlights:

⦿ Kick-off at the Museum of Moving Image on Friday, October 14
⦿ Science New Wave Works-In-Progress & HABITAT Reception on Saturday, October 15
⦿ SYMBIOSIS 2022 Competition will be in-person throughout the week.
⦿ Film programs will all kick-off with a single screening at Cinema Village in New York's East Village.

More about our full line-up, programs, and how to purchase tickets will be announced shortly. In the meantime, visit our Press Center for virtual festival swag + important key dates.

Check in regularly as changes may occur based on health and safety guidelines. Revisions and festival guidelines will be announced closer to festival and indicated in the program descriptions.
Are the selected films in competition?
Yes. Our films are eligible for several awards and cash prizes.

Science New Wave Features are in competition. They will play both in person at one of our venues and online via our partnering platform Labocine.com. They include a slate of a dozen films that proposes a visionary look on how to bring science into film. The winner will receive the WarnerMedia OneFifty award.

Spotlights Features include special programs (out of competition) that are timely and do not shy away from controversial topics while providing well-balance discourse on scientific issues and crises. These also include a retrospective of some of our favorite works.

Labocine Close-Ups includes a very select program of films, of various lengths and forms, presented by Labocine that will be exclusively streaming on the platform. These pieces are avant-garde, subject-specific pieces that show us an intimate view of the world around us. The films in this selection should not be overlooked but on the contrary, examined more closely, carefully dissected, and appreciated without the constraint of time and space.

All Shorts are in competition, and they'll be included in our short programs. They will play both in person at one of our partnering venues and online via our partnering platform Labocine.com.

Short film awards include the In Vivo Award, the Theme-Sensitive Award, the Avant-Garde Award, and the Jury's Choice Award.

The Symbiosis Award is given every year for the Symbiosis scientist/filmmaker competition (learn more and apply by Aug 15 here). Awards are sponsored by a myriad of like-minded science and art organizations.
ISFF15 is streaming virtually for all audiences
on Labocine.com.

Why is the Science New Wave movement so vital in today's times?
We're slowly coming out of a 2+ year pandemic, and our lives have permanently changed. It has never been more important to find ways to communicate science through visual storytelling and to spark conversations. We need to keep experimenting with new ways to bridge the worlds of science and cinema. We also need to prevent false or sensationalized information from reaching the public. Lastly, it is important to understand that science affects all of us in different ways, whether it is as individuals, a society, or the world at-large.

The Imagine Science Film Festival and partnering platform Labocine celebrate the idea of fluidity in form in how we tell science stories. It started in New York City but now extends its tentacles to the world by inviting filmmakers, scientists, and audiences to take part in this grand experiment. We want to keep the spirit of a borderless festival by partnering with different institutions worldwide. We encourage people to join the Science New Wave and create an art/science HABITAT ecosystem to spark collaborations and exchanges.
